I noticed on my new Mac power book that I've got Bluetooth. What the hell is it and what does it do?

It's a short range low power low speed wireless technology. It runs on the same frequency as 802.11b (2.5Ghz) and microwave ovens. It has several very cool uses in that (with a Mac at least) you can just walk by or walk up to your computer or your PDA and your phone and/or PDA will automatically sync with the other devices. That is, once you've setup the devices on each other. There are a couple of other uses such as wireless keyboards and mice. Another one is wireless headsets for cell phones which are very handy to have.

As for Bluetooth phones. TMobile, AT&T Wireless and Cingular are the only carriers that I can think of. You are also more likely to find Bluetooth on GSM phones since it's used in Europe/Japan so heavily.

You can also use a bluetooth phone to control applications on the Mac. For instance, the phone can become a wireless remote for controlling a Powerpoint or Keynote presentation. And you can create AppleScripts that will allow lots of cool interraction between the Mac & a cell phone... like starting/stopping an application when you are within a certain range of the computer (iTunes is a good candidate for this one).

I saw an ad, I think best buy, where with 1 year service you get both the Ericson phone and blue tooth ear peace for either $50 or free. Sadly it only works on AT&T and I am a verizon guy. I love my motorola phone, just wish it was blue tooth.
